Βρόμιος (Bromios) in ancient Greece was used as an epithet of Dionysos. It signifies ''noisy'', ''roaring''. A surname which some explain by saying that he was born during a storm of thunder and lightning (Diod. iv. 5, Dion Chrys. Ov. 27), others derive it from the noise of the Bacchanic processions whence the verb bromiazomai to rage like a Bacchant (Ov. Met.iv. 11, Orph. Lith. xvii. 77).
