And while Burgundy puts itself out of the running with outrageous prices for its wines, neighbouring Beaujolais to the south of the region produces wines of beautiful complexity and full of character, especially from the region's top cru. Their key feature? While they are sufficiently "serious" to move stylistically to the extremes of an excellent Burgundy they give a more immediate satisfaction to the one who consumes them. There is no better wine to embody this immediacy and pleasure than Julien Sunier's Regnie. Think of a red Burgundy as the equivalent of a posh French restaurant with white linen tablecloths and Regnie as a relaxed, restaurant-style palate-pleasing dish like Lyon's famous Bouchon. Its fresh red fruit "blossoms" into aromas of lilies and roses with exceptional elegance and finesse on the palate.

More info

In the cru of Regnie are most of Julien Sunier's own vineyards in great "Lieux dits" such as En Oeillat. Here the vines are old, with an average age of 60 years, and are located at an altitude of between 280-400 meters on pink granitic sand with clay in the subsoil. Vinification is in an anaerobic environment (maceration carbonic) for about 10-20 days and pressing is done in a vertical old wooden press. 20% of the wine is matured in concrete tanks and 80% in old Burgundy barrels purchased from his mentor the great Burgundian Roumier for 8 months in contact with the lees. The wine is bottled unfiltered and with the addition of very low sulphites during bottling.
