Bernard Baudry Chinon Grezeaux

The Baudrys are the magicians of terroir in Chinon, with vineyards in different soils (on the plain, on the hills and up on the plateau over the hillside) which they farm organically and elucidate with single vineyard vinifications. It is overwhelming how a single variety can demonstrate itself in so many ways inside an appellation. Les Grezeaux is one of their most unique vineyards, with very old vines near the river side, on sandy soils containing gravel in a big percentage. This specific terroir is famous for the racy Cabernet Franc it produces, with a firm tannic structure that needs patience to wear down and let the wine mellow.

More info

A minimum intervention philosophy as in all Baudry wines to impress as clearly as possible the contrasts and different expressions of specific terroirs. Les Grezeaux ferments in cement tanks with indigenous yeasts and will age for approximately fifteen months in old oak barrels of two to five years in the, carved in limestone (or “tuffeau” as the locals call it), troglodyte cellar. Unmistakable aromas of Cabernet Franc on the nose, a perfect expression of the aromatic essence of the grape in a mix of smoke, minerality with vivid red fruit, a vegetal character of burnt green pepper and juniper with animal notes on the background. Lively due to the high acidity level, tannins that extend the firmness with the typical grip, but also nicely accentuated fresh fruit on the palate, in a promising combination for ageing.
