Champagne Benoît Lahaye Le Jardin de la Grosse Pierre

109,80 €

Small vignerons like Benoit Lahaye managed to change the subject and instead of talking about the cellar start taking notice of the vineyard once again, thus changing the balance in the area. The profound changes that are underway during the past years bring to the forefront amazing single-vineyards, which the producers make perfect use of in premium bottlings. The talk is heated for wines like “Jardin de la Grosse Pierre”. A unique single vineyard - a Jurassic park of forgotten varieties of Champagne-, planted for the first time in 1923 by the great-grandfather of Benoit Lahaye. Benoit vinifies all the different varieties together with a “light” hand and drives the purists of Champagne nuts, with the authenticity and the character of this rare Champagne.

More info

On some very old vines located in a slopping site of Bouzy, next to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, exist varieties like Pinot Gris, Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc that used to thrive in Champagne. Benoit himself hasn’t yet managed to identify all the varieties of this specific plot (among them and some not allowed any more in Champagne production) which is what we call a field blend. From 2009 onwards, Benoit bottles the wine of this vineyard separately, fermenting exclusively in oak, with indigenous yeasts and no dosage in order to emphasize the complexity and the unique aromas of this amazing Champagne. Opulent, honeyed, earthy and nutty, it takes time to unveil all its aromatic and structural complexity. It has persistence on the palate with tones of fruit and energy, a sublime interplay between texture and endogenous austerity. A Champagne of character like no other.
