If Vinho Verde is best known for a style of wine synonymous with light body, smooth effervescence and lack of complexity, a style that is mass-produced in the region, Fernardo Paiva's wines are quite the opposite. Quinta da Palmirinha produces some of Portugal's most 'serious' whites from indigenous varieties, with a hands-off approach to the winery and is participating in the renaissance brought about by the region's small artisan producers. Azal is a unique literal wine that will not remind you of any other wine you have ever had. Very aromatic, with wild flowers and citrus, green apple and absolutely "pure" in expression, with drool-worthy acidity and moderate alcohol. Light as a feather in the mouth, but with incredible persistence and flavour length. Tons of freshness and a soft smoky minerality on the finish.
