After decades of abandonment, producers such as the Lyrarakis estate are turning in search of the forgotten wine treasures of the Cretan vineyard. Liatiko Angelis is a pre-drying vineyard on the eastern edge of Crete that was planted in the 1930s. In fact, it is not just a rare vineyard, but a vineyard that was in danger of disappearing. This particular Liatiko Angelis has unprecedented levels of concentration and tannins in the mouth. But much more behind the rescue of this vineyard, the family respects the unique wealth they have in their hands by following a quiet vinification with a perfectly light hand. The result is one of the most terroir-driven, distinctive and interesting wines not only of Crete but of Greece as a whole.

More info

Angelis is a clear proof of how many more secrets the Greek vineyard hides. The fruit is fermented in open oak fermenters with a high percentage of whole bunches, without temperature control, with indigenous yeasts and minimal sulphites in a completely traditional vinification of the variety. Overlook its soft colour with a brick red hue. The whole heart of the wine is in the tensions and concentration of aromas and flavours. Fruit a little more shy than dried, a slight floral note and spicy hints, among them umami character. Very robust structure, richly alcoholic yet fresh thanks to the fantastic acidity. Echoes of leather and earth that yet cannot distract from the concentration of the fruit. The dilemma is whether one can let it age developing even more complexity. Probably a bit difficult since it's already enjoyable and generous.
