    Perhaps the most sensational of Champalou's great Vouvray, but certainly a Chenin Blanc worth aging for many years in your cellar. Le Portail vineyard is essentially the family's "garden", just steps outside their home in the heart of Vouvray. Walking through this particular vineyard you are right on top of the family's cave winery. This particular vineyard is vinified individually in new 500 barrels, with the lees stirred and a total of 18 months in oak before bottling. Obviously this is not a classic Vouvray, but its complexity and piercing acidity will be etched in your memory for a long time.

    Intense toasted and dry-fleshed aromas from the barrel, with smoky notes around a core of ripe almost exotic fruit. Tensions are piercing, with the bouquet developing beautifully in the glass. The palate has the natural harmony of all the Champalou family wines. The volume and richness of the wine are balanced thanks to its spectacular - razor-like - acidity, combined with a strong mineral sensation on the palate. It is hard to find intensely barreled wines with such delicate balance and silky texture as this Champalou masterpiece. In keeping with all their wines, Le Portail is produced with a gentle natural vinification and a "soft" hand, which allows the power of the clay terroir of this particular vineyard to shine through in the glass.
