Marcel Deiss Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru

One of the stunning Grand Cru of the Marcel Deiss winery whose tasting perhaps best explains the genius of the great Alsatian producer. It is as if you have before you a "symphony orchestra" performing its work in perfect harmony. Altenberg always has residual sugars, possesses incredible richness, power but also a fantastic nerve and precision of expression. It's hard to classify it as sweet or dry despite its sugars. It's more than just numbers or trying to put it into words, it's a real experience, a wine that belongs in a special "league", it's a great grand vin. If you measure it in terms of actual numbers you'll fall short. Its sweetness would rank it between a German Kabinett and Spatlese. Taste-wise, however, it's neither of those things. Botrytis, huge dry extract (yields of less than 20hl/ha) and the fact that the Alsatian sun gives much richer wines make it quite different. One of the greatest terroirs not only of Alsace but of the whole planet.

More info

In a surprising paradox, Altenberg is visibly soft on the palate, but at the same time perfectly dry on the finish. Nature, this particular vineyard, has "painted" it to be so. A natural combination of power and grace, softness and dryness. The result is this particular grand cru, and the Deisses have no reason to intervene to push, for example, because of a fashion or a tendency to make the wine completely dry when it naturally doesn't "want" to be. A wine that combines honey and apricot botrytis with zesty citrus and lemon in a nose and palate of veritable "fireworks" of aromas and flavors. As rich and sweet as the front of the palette is, the back is the ultimate contrast: dry, airy, fresh, full of energy and minerality with the intense acidity provided by limestone. The grand cru of grand crus! A combination of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer and the magic of terroir.
