Marcel Deiss Schoffweg

For many, Alsace, despite the fact that it is still magical, has lost its way and has failed to stay relevant with what we call a modern flavour. But Deiss are the most important exponents of diversity, the ultimate expression of Alsace's complex terroir and the region's synchronicity with modern wine culture. The Schoffweg is an extension of the Altenberg de Bergheim vineyard (literally meaning the sheep trail) and leads to the terroir of Grasberg, the last one on top of Altenberg. The vineyard faces east and its warm climate is influenced by cool winds. The poor rocky terroir with yellow limestone gives a wine that is extremely complex without the expression of botrytis, unlike Grasberg. Dry, with an underlying sweetness, fresh and elegant, dense yet vibrant, complex and extremely salty on the palate with a soft bitterness on the finish that adds another dimension.

More info

A field blend vineyard with Riesling varieties, the different Pinots of Alsace and some Muscat and Chasselas. Organic and biodynamic farming as in all 26 hectares of Deiss vineyards with an also old-school approach to winemaking, a reference to Alsace's past. Pressing of blended grapes with whole bunches, spontaneous fermentation and maturation for 12 months in old oak barrels. Rich, intense, elegant and full-bodied at the same time, with a minerality reminiscent of "broken stone" and lemon peel. Another sensational wine that exemplifies the genius of Deiss.
