Marcel Deiss La Colline Rouge Vin Orange

39,90 €

"La Colline Rouge" comes from the terroir of Rotenberg in the village of Bergheim, one of the winemaker's crus d'Alsace, an "off-licence" approach to the winery which is a benchmark in highlighting the characteristics of the single-vineyard cru of Alsace. In a Burgundian juxtaposition these are the producer's premier cru although in this case Deiss' interest in highlighting them is not based on a variety (as in Burgundy) but on a field blend. Rotenberg translates into French as "La Colline Rouge" (the red hill) and Deiss use the French translations of the vineyard names on the label to name their skin-contact versions of their wines from these particular terroirs. While on their whites they keep the German name of the specific terroir (Rotenberg). The wine stays for 10 months in contact with the skins in amphorae.

More info

Its name comes from the red soils which are calcareous and rich in iron and have this red hue. The grapes from the vineyard (part of Rotenberg) are vinified in contact with the skins and are a combination of Riesling and Pinot Gris planted in 1982. The colour is amber, the nose is surprisingly intense with a combination of spicy Asian spices, lemon zest and peel and other citrus fruits. Dry, powerful yet elegant at the same time, with fine tannins on the finish, like those left by a fine quality tea. The wine has been bottled unfiltered and without added sulphites.
