Marcel Deiss Grasberg

The terroir of Grasberg is located on top of the hill of the grand cru Altenberg in Bergheim (at 340m) and translates as "the hill on which the grass grows". Deiss follows his own system of classifying his vineyards and has classified Grasberg as one of his premier cru in Burgundian terms. The soils are very shallow with roots penetrating the limestone (Jurassic period) to find the ingredients they need. The wine is a field-blend of the Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer varieties and is characterised by its strong minerality. The most "electrically charged" of Deiss' botrytised wines. An explosion of lemon jam and minty freshness on the nose, a medium to almost dry palate with energy, surprising freshness and mouthwatering texture. The botrytis is extremely "restrained" by the energy of the wine, the fruit rich, tropical and ripe but correspondingly intense in its energy and angles. Another monumental game of balance, a wine that has found the golden mean in its individual elements.

More info

An incredible "polyphony" of aromas and flavours in another unique Deiss style. Grasberg is perhaps the top of their premier cru, an altitude vineyard that combines minerality, energy, the freshness of the site and the limestone soils along with the notes of botrytis which here does not feel heavy against the wine but the wine manages to have a "crystal" dimension. It is almost magical how all its individual elements coexist in such harmony and none of them tries to get ahead. A Deiss "phenomenon" wine that is pressed with whole bunches, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 12 months in old large barrels (foudres).
