The red wines tell only a part of the story of the Rhone. Worth mentioning the power of the region's whites. Among Philippe Desbos' already minimal production, the Saint-Joseph white is an extremely rare wine made from 100% Marsanne and one of the best expressions of the variety. Often the controversy about Rhone whites has been spotted on their heavier and rustic character, when Burgundy whites are highly acidic, Philippe's Saint Joseph Blanc is an excellent wine with a lovely creamy texture, acidity, the lack of which can make the wines heavy or inelegant. It ages in cement and old oak barrels for 12 months, developing aromas of ripe pear, white-fleshed peach and floral aromas around a soft, creamy, dry-fleshed palate.
Located on the plateau of Gouye, from which it actually borrows its name, Domaine de Gouye shows an absolutely timeless feel and tranquillity. Mistral passing through the vineyards and Ramses, the estate horse ploughs the vines are the most vibrant movements in between. Along with the stumps of Syrah planted since the 50s, there are also a few plantings of white Marsanne, which is the main white variety both here and on the Hermitage hill opposite. Philippe Desbos follows the same traditional philosophy for his rare white, with the vines ploughed with the help of a horse, the fermentations are spontaneous and the wine is matured for 12 months in tanks and old foudres, developing a wonderful creamy texture and a mineral focus that gives exceptional energy to the whites.
