With a history spanning more than 130 years and six generations, Clos la Coutale is one of the most important wineries in Cahors, a region that has been associated with Malbec long before Argentina was established as a premium production site for the variety. Malbec originates from this part of France and from the austere soils around the Lot River that runs through the appellation of origin before coming to join the Garonne later on.
The Bernede family has 100 hectares of privately owned vineyards that they grow organically in Cahors, making the estate the largest organic Malbec estate in southwest France. Philippe Bernede is also the inventor of double "hinge" openers which, along with his many other patents (e.g. the Coutale Pigeur - a pigeage system) showcase his genius. Together with his sons he runs the historic Cahors estate producing wines of exceptional balance and with amazing value for money.
The winery's wines are matured in a system of small and larger barrels and masterfully balance between the traditional rustic character of the region and drinkability. The wines have excellent ageing potential which can rival that of much more expensive wines from neighbouring Bordeaux.
